Fall 2015 Trend III: Pussy Bow - Prim And Proper No Longer
Posted on 18 September 2015
Whoever thought of combining a neck tie and a blouse into one garment deserves respect because there is nothing like a pussy bow blouse or a dress that maximizes the strength of femininity. And whoever thought of bringing pussy bow back to vogue also deserves rightful respect because there are just so many ways to style this versatile piece of clothing. But most importantly, we are all grateful to Margaret Thatcher for making pussy bow a trend in the first place.
The big, floppy bows at the neckline of a clothing, namely known as a “pussy bow,” has been in and out of fashion for quite some decades. It started making a quiet comeback since sometime in 2014, if I remember correctly. I also bought myself a dotted Uniqlo pussy bow blouse then that I wear quite frequently all four seasons.
And it would be a mistake to think pussy bows are still just for the prim and proper. This season, pussy bows come in sheer and lace materials, giving off a more sexy and fragile vibe. Ties in different lengths and widths have made pussy bows a key bohemian styling ornament for this fall.
No longer styled only with a straight line pencil skirt, pussy bow blouses are not just for girly girls. Wear a pussy bow blouse with any pair of jeans to add a slight bit of formality to your outfit. Or aim for a retro mood with a pleated midi skirt. You can also have some fun with the fabric of the blouse as it comes in all sorts of materials including denim, satin, and chiffon.
A lot of low-neck pussy bow blouses were a hit on the runways this season. And you may have seen many SPA brands styling a lower neckline pussy bow blouse with a mini skirt on their online shops. A miniskirt is a good pair to a pussy bow blouse because a blouse with one extravagant neck tie may seem a little too “appropriate” at times. Mixing and matching it with a garment that gives off an opposite sort of vibe, i.e. more playful and informal, is always a smart choice if you prefer looking less dressed up, while wearing it with a pair of trousers, fitted or wide, will add more decorum to your outfit.
There is nothing quite like a pussy bow dress that can help you pull off the “preppy girl from a wealthy family” kind of look. Match a classy pussy bow dress with a small satchel or a shoulder bag, and remember to ease down on jewelry as a pussy bow almost plays the role of a necklace and other heavy jewelry can divert attention from its charm and will look like it’s “too much.”
A good way to avoid looking too proper wearing a pussy bow clothing? Try making a tie to the side, without making a bow. Or better yet, just let it hang and fly about as you walk and move around. Narrower ties are always better for a less formal look, but if you want to make more of a statement, I suggest you go for one of those blouses or dresses with a huge, wide, and floppy tie.
Don’t worry if it gets colder and you can’t seem to figure out a way to wear a thin fabric pussy bow blouse or a dress. Layering it under a deep v-neck oversized knit or a sweater dress and having your bow just peep out through the wide neck opening is a must try styling idea in the winter.
If you haven’t had the chance to get a pussy bow blouse or a dress, now is the time. But if you can’t make up your mind on buying a pussy bow clothing, maybe try imitating the look with a skinny or wide solid color scarf you have. And remember, now is the best time to give this fail-safe ticket to feminine chic look a try!
